Very interesting article. I've sort of started to enjoy making dumb notes more than serious posts, and I feel that's by design. But I've also thought about quitting the whole site because I've let my shitty jokes become my whole personality here. But it's the only way I have fun at the same time.
For what it's worth. I love being a bit silly and dramatic with notes. I also don't think it's smothering the platform. Yes it's clear that there is some weight behind using it and yes there are considerable issues with it's implications ie scheduling notes. I'm fortunate through my own discovery page maintenance that I don't see any of the worst cases of this anymore. Some snuck back in yesterday so it's a regular piece of work.
Am I sticking my head in the sand probably but they do have a purpose. I use them from time to time to sift through the comments looking for weird people who need a look at. Met some brilliant people through it.
I think they’re trying to encourage spam because they want to juke the stats. I believe they want as much activity as possible, even if most of it is spam, because they’re going to sell Substack, so they want to make it look like there’s a lot more activity here than there really is. That’s why they make it easy for spammers to preschedule spam notes to flood the algorithm. It’s all about building up phony stats.
It’s the classic conflict between depth versus surface level click bait. We started Substack for depth, but they want click bait to lure others onto the platform
This place, is what it is, yeah its chock a block with engagement farmers and people selling dreams of how to get to a squllion subscribers in no time, but ultimately its like life, you find a way to make it work for you. I hope you get to feel more seen, I do like your stuff, I really like your style, it feels really real.
I think this is one of the stronger takes I’ve seen on how to approach the platform. And yes I made my peace with it (three times now in fact, getting good at making my peace with it >:3) I think the circles I’ve been able to frequent and the others whom I’ve nagged into being willing to talk with me are brilliant (yourself included as of lately as well :3)
Thanks for the thoughts on my style, there’s a lot of Tall Poppy and general insecurity being worked through for celebrating myself with regards to that but this week has shown that a number of people echo your thoughts. I might have to start believing it at some point XD
Yep, what Ive noticed here is that its all about finding something that feels like a tribe, and then exploring and engaging with others people's stuff, sharing it etc, and being consistent about it too. I struggle with the consistency cos as much as I love it here I have a day job and other day to day stuff to do too, I see it as a marathon, not a sprint!
I hope you work your way through that stuff soon enough, we all visit that place from time to time, grow that poppy tall and proud!
Social media as an anti social person is hard, especially when the algorithm works against you. I just want to write and meet others who want to write, but my feed is choked with garbage I don’t care about.
Every once in a while, someone like Kayleigh Thorpe shows up on it and I’m reminded why I’m here and keep coming back.
Ow…You’ve made my night with this. It does get a bit…tricky sometimes especially when you’ve really own got your own headspace to keep going. I’m glad that I’m able to fulfil a role which many many others have provided for me.
I read the article. I do not remember promising anyone anything. I try to read and comment on as many posts as I can as I understand that it's the only thing I can personally do to help others. And yes I would like it to be reciprocated, but often it isn't and that's alright. I'm going to keep screaming just the same.

They intentionally make learning the algo as difficult as possible.
It's not right.
